Fines

About LSS: Fines | History | LSS Jobs | Mission | Overview

Learning Support Services assists faculty and students with loans of audio and visual media for educational purposes. We maintain a large library of materials for the thousands of students who attend this University each year. When we lose a piece of this collection, it must be replaced. The cost of replacement is passed along to the library patrons who have failed to return these materials. In the case of students, this is done in the form of a University-sanctioned fine.

When we are alerted to the absence of an item, an e-mail is sent to the University registered address for that person. The patron is asked to simply return the item. In the case of a student who cannot return the item, a fine will be levied to recoup the cost of that item in our collection. The consequences of nonpayment of a fine are...

  • Not being allowed to register for classes
  • Not being allowed to check out books from the UW libraries
  • Not being allowed to graduate
  • Not being allowed to receive transcripts

If a student has discovered they have a fine, and wants to resolve the situation, they can come to our offices in 279 Van Hise Hall on the University campus to pay for their fine with cash (exact change only) or by check. We are open from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Once a fine has been paid, the hold is released within a few minutes, and the student is then free to use University services as they normally would.

However, those who are not near the University campus can also resolve their fine by sending LSS a check for the exact amount to:

L&S Learning Support Services
University of Wisconsin
1220 Linden Drive
279 Van Hise Hall
Madison, WI 53706
ATTN: FINES

Checks should be made payable to the "University of Wisconsin". Include your student ID number on all checks/correspondence.

LSS is only responsible for fines we submit through our department. We do not handle fines for other departments.

If you need to pay the fine in order to receive an unofficial transcript, and it is inconvenient to recontact the Transcript Department, include a note with your payment. We will notify the Transcript Department to send you your unofficial transcript.
