Downloading files with Internet Explorer 8

August 26, 2009 by Sue Weier

Internet Explorer 8 is a new version of the familiar browser.  Most of you probably have had Internet Explorer 8 installed as part of your monthly Windows Update patches.

We've received some reports of students and faculty having problems downloading files with Internet Explorer 8.  This seems to occur most often with applications that require the user to log into the site with a username and password.  It has been reported in the L&S LessonShare application, as well as other sites that run with a URL starting with https instead of http.

If you encounter this problem, there are a couple workarounds that may help you get to the file that you need.

  1. Our recommended solution is to try using a different web browser.  It's always a good idea to have two browsers on your computer.  Mozilla Firefox is an excellent choice, and the browser that LSS advises faculty and staff to use.
  2. If you can't use another browser, you may be able to simply change the https to http at the beginning of the URL.

If neither suggestion works, contact the site administrator for assistance.
