Using Help in Collaborative Sites

September 1, 2009 by Sue Weier

Help documents are available via two methods in your course website.

A complete listing of Help documents, divided by categories, is available by clicking the red Help tab.  These documents cover general help, the Collaborative Site interface, and common tasks.

Contextual help is also delivered at appropriate times while you work on the site.  For example, when you create a post, you'll see a list of documents titled Help: Create content appear.  When you click a document title, it opens in another tab in your browser.  You can switch between the tabs to finish your task.  If you prefer switching between windows, you can right-click on the document title and select "Open link in new window".

If you don't find the contextual help useful, the lists can be turned off.  To do this, follow these directions:

  1. Click My Account.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Scroll down to the Block configuration section.
  4. Uncheck the items in this section to turn off the listings.
  5. Click Update.

All the Help documents for Collaborative Site course websites are stored in the LSS website (http://lss.wisc.edu).  You can find them on that website by searching for "Collaborative Site" and any other appropriate terms.  However, it will probably be more convenient to access Help documents through your course.
