The 21st Century (Network) is Finally Here!

After several years of waiting for a promised 21st Century Network, we finally have one!

In terms of technology, what this means is that all old networking cabling, hubs, and switches have been replaced with high speed equipment that increases the speed of your connection by up to 10 times. In the background, DoIT will now be responsible for maintaining equipment that we at LSS had to maintain. The managed equipment now in place will make it easier to pinpoint and resolve network problems. Read more »

Podcasting Grants Perfect for Language Teachers

Network Upgrade

It was originally scheduled to be much sooner (which is why we suggested to Van Hise folks that they buy network cables in preparation for the upgrade a looooong time ago) and we are delighted that it is here. For several years, LSS has been helping language students “chat” their way to a more extensive and spontaneous vocabulary in their chosen language. Students regularly use chat and instant messaging (IM) for recreation, so it can be a struggle to repurpose this sort of communication method for instruction. Read more »

The audiocassette is dead. Actually, it's been comatose for some time now, but it really hit me when I recently looked at our circulation statistics. In the Fall semester of 1996 we circulated 12,059 audiocassettes from the Learning Lab. In the Fall of 2004 we circulated 660. In Spring 2005, 378. In the commercial world, of course, audiocassettes were replaced by compact disks. Read more »
