Video Digitization
Video material, like audio, has been, up until recently, stored
in analog format, generally on tapes. However, to put material on
newer mediums, such as the Internet, DVD's or CD's, it is necessary
to convert video to a digital format. This process is called digitization.
LSS has the equipment and software to convert analog video to digital
video formats. We have several workstations where users can learn
a simple editing program or can work with users to coordinate a
larger project of video digitization.
Users who wish to embark on a digitization project should contact
LSS staff in the Video Resource Center. To convert a piece of video
from analog (tape) to digital requires the same copyright releases
as one would have for normal duplication of that same tape. Costs
of digital mediums, such as CD's or DVD's vary, and users will need
to pay for these materials. In addition, the video digitization
workstations are in heavy use, so coordination with VRC staff on
this equipment will ease scheduling problems.
LSS also has streaming servers for materials which need to be streamed
for instructional purposes over the web. Again, those wishing to
create material for online dispersal should contact the staff at
LSS for more information.
