Campus Options for Individual Websites and Web Hosting

Members of the UW-Madison community now have access to a variety of website and web hosting systems. In addition, new services such as Box and Google Drive mean information that once lived on the web can now be shared in new and different ways. For these reasons and others, LSS is discontinuing its support for web hosting that relies on the Samba File Storage service on June 30, 2016. We are individually contacting all website owners who are being affected by this change; if you received such an email, please read on.

Between now and June 30, we recommend that you review the websites saved within your mapped drive and save any files you wish to keep on your UW-owned computer. You can do this either using your web browser or by connecting to your network drive on the vanhise web server.

How to connect to your Samba account:

Because the landscape around file storage and web hosting has changed so dramatically since this service was started, it is difficult to provide a single recommendation about where to move your website/web files. Course-related content can be incorporated into a learning management system like Moodle or Desire2Learn, both part of Learn@UW. Videos can go in Kaltura or on YouTube. Social sites like Academia.edu, LinkedIn, or even Facebook now frequently stand in for 'About Me' or other profile webpages. Finally, there are many benefits to incorporating your individual collection of pages into your organizational website (your academic department/tenure home's website, for example, or the website of your Center, Program, Institute, etc.).

What follows is a list of some of the campus-provided options that may be available to you. If you would like to talk about your specific situation, please contact us.
