What We Backup when We Do a Backup
Eudora Files
I usually do a search for *.mbx folders and then find the most recent version in the likely place. Most of the time this is
X:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\Email
Or
X:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\
Or
X:\WiscWorldUsers\username\Email\
I back up all *.mbx files, all *.toc files, *.fol directories, the attach directory, and the nndbase.txt.
NNdbase is the address book. It consists of two parts; nndbase.txt and nndbase.toc
Every mailbox consists of two parts; the *.mbx and *.toc file. Both must be named the same thing to work. The *.mbx file is a text file. This can be edited in case of mailbox corruption. The TOC is the file that tells you where to look in the text file for the data.
Usually this will all need to be replaced into the
X:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora
Folder.
Sometimes this is not visible; you may need to unhide hidden folders.
Remember, if you want to save the existing in, out or trash, you'll need to rename them like so….in.mbx and in.toc (which together create the in mailbox) need to both be named oldin.mbx and oldin.toc before you copy over other mailboxes. That way, you haven't copied over one set of mailboxes with another.
Favorites
Even though we officially hate Internet Explorer, we should backup and transfer the favorites. It's a folder found here.
X:\Documents and Settings\username\Favorites
It goes into the same place on the new computer. Just copy over the existing one created by default by the new computer.
Documents
It goes without saying that copying over documents is necessary. Look in the following places for documents.
X:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents
X:\My Files
X:\WPWIN\WPDOCS
X:\Office\WPWIN\WPDOCS
Of course a list from the professor of what exactly they need backed up is probably better than anything else. Remember to tell them that we generally can't back up programs. We can reinstall, but not backup.
Outlook/Outlook Express
If they use Outlook or Outlook Express, you just can't copy files over; you need to make a backup. To do this, you have to export your personal folders, contacts and other archives to a PST file. This is done by choosing the folder tree you'd like to archive, then click File menu, then Export. To a file, Choose a PST subtype. Name it something descriptive. Remember where you saved it and copy that PST over to the new machine. Otherwise, they'll lose their calendar, their email, and their contacts. And you don't want to be on the wrong end of that.
Thunderbird
If they use Thunderbird instead of Outlook or Eudora, first of all THANK GOD. Copy over the entire contents of the randomly named folder found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles
Mozilla Firefox
If they use Mozilla Firefox, you'll find the bookmarks here: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles, inside of a randomly named folder. Copy over the bookmarks.html, which should have a fairly recent date.
Other Versions of Netscape/Mozilla
These other versions stored their bookmark(s).htm(l) in various places. The best thing you can do is to search your hard drive for anything called bookmark. Then, look at the most recently modified dates to determine which, if any are being used. This file is simply a web page stored on the local computer. In putting it on a new computer, I'd simply open Firefox or Mozilla or whatever, and choose Manage Bookmarks, then Import this file. That way, it gets copied over and you don't have to deal with figuring out where to put it.
