Instructions for Mac OS X.x | Mac OS 9.x or lower
I don't know what version of Mac OS I have! Help!
To find out what version of Mac OS you have, click the multicolored Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your machine, and choose "About This Computer" or "About this Mac". It will tell you what version you have.
To make a Connection to a LSS Server (FROM OFF CAMPUS ONLY), you MUST download and install WiscVPN.
To download and install it, see this web page. http://www.doit.wisc.edu/network/vpn/
To configure it, see this web page. http://lss.wisc.edu/~sara/Modifying_the_VPN_CLIENT.htm
If you are connecting from ON CAMPUS, don't worry about the WiscVPN stuff, and proceed.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to connect using WiscVPN first. To do this, just double click the icon for it and enter your netid and password when prompted. (only if connecting from OFF-CAMPUS)
Click the "Go" menu and choose the "Connect to Server" option.
Where it says "Address:", type this...
smb://DNSname of server/username
where DNS name is like this ...
and username is the username that has been assigned to you by the server administrator.
Hit enter after typing this in.
A window will appear. Leave the workgroup as is, but change the username to your username and the password to your password. Hit enter.
If successful, you will see a globe icon onyour desktop with your user name under it. This is your active server connection.
If you double click this, you will see a folder called public_html. Put your web files within public_html and you will be putting them on the website.
When you are done using this, you can drag the globe to your trash bin.
Very recently, this campus stopped routing for Appletalk.
You really need to consider upgrading to Mac OS X.
We will no longer support Mac OS 9.x or lower connectivity to our servers. It's not that it can't be done; it just can't be done securely. There are tools for using secure copy for Mac OS 9.x, but the WiscVPN client is not available for Mac OS 9.x from DoIT, and that is only way we can assure that you are part of the campus community.
Please see me to discuss upgrading options.
